Learn about yogic mudra

The Sanskrit word “Mudra” can be defined as “psychic, emotional, devotional, and aesthetic gestures”. Mudra can also be defined as a “seal”, “short-cut”, or “circuit by-pass”. Each Mudra has a specific purpose in the body. A Mudra may involve the whole body or be a simple hand gesture. It facilitates the flow of energy in the body. Mudras can be practiced with yogic breathing practices or meditation. They can alter mood, attitude, and perception and deepen awareness and concentration.

Our fingers have five elements in them as follows:

  1. Thumb – Fire
  2. Index finger – Air
  3. Middle finger – Spac
  4. Ring finger – Earth
  5. Little finger – Water

Let’s learn some Yogic Mudras that will harness the power of these five elements and help us improve our life.

Mudra – The Psychic Gesture of Knowledge

Jnana Mudra helps you concentrate and improves your memory. This Mudra also helps to cure insomnia and increases energy and stamina.

How to practice this Mudra:

  • Sit in a comfortable position.
  • Curl the index fingers of both hands so that they touch the base of the thumb. The other three fingers should be open and relaxed.
  • Place your hands on the knees with palms facing downward.
    hello

Chin Mudra – The Psychic Gesture of Consciousness

Chin mudra helps you focus and improves your creativity. Like jnana mudra, it also helps with insomnia and increases energy and stamina.

How to practice:

  • Sit in a comfortable position.
  • Curl the index fingers of both hands so that they touch the base of the thumb. The other three fingers must remain open and relaxed.
  • Place your hands on the knees with the palms facing upward.
    hello

Yoni Mudra – The Attitude of the Womb or the Source

Yoni mudra helps to reduce unnecessary chatter in the mind. It immensely aids in making you more attentive and being present in the moment.

How to practice:

  • Sit in a comfortable position.
  • Place both your palms together with the fingers and thumbs straight and pointing away from the body.
  • Keeping the tips of the index fingers together, turn the little, ring, and middle fingers inwards so that the sides of the fingers are touching. Interlock the little, ring and middle fingers.
  • Bring the thumbs towards the body and join the tips of the fingers together to form the base of a yoni.
    hello

Bhairava Mudra

Bhairava mudra brings balance between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. It is helpful for people suffering from stress, anxiety and mood swings.

How to practice:

  • Sit in a comfortable position.
  • Place the right hand on top of the left, with the palms of both hands facing up.
  • Rest both hands in your lap. Close your eyes and relax your whole body, keeping it motionless.
    hello

Hridaya Mudra

It connects you to your heart and builds the courage to follow your heart. It imparts a powerful sense of vitality and calm.

How to practice:

  • Sit in any comfortable meditation asana.
  • Place the tips of the index fingers of both hands at the base of the thumbs, as in chin and jnana mudras, and join the tips of the middle and ring fingers to the tips of the thumbs, so they are placed side by side.
  • The little finger should remain straight. Place the hands on the knees with the palms facing upward. Close your eyes and relax the whole body, keeping it motionless.

hello
