Women are a very important and integral part of our world. And of the most important natural and biological tasks of women is to bring new life to our world. But do you know that this whole process is tiring and involves many complications related to the mother's physical and mental health? And above it, if there are other problems like PCOS, Thyroid issues and Weight issues etc., which directly and indirectly create more chaos in one's life with a baby in their belly. In this blog, the major focus will be on Thyroid and Thyroid during pregnancy and related pregnancy complications

But before proceeding further, we need to understand what is THYROID and what are its symptoms and factors affecting it.

Your Thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, situated just above your collarbone. It is one of the endocrine glands which makes hormones. Thyroid hormones control the rate of various activities in your body. These include how fast you burn calories and how fast your heartbeats. All of these activities are your body's metabolism.

Problems due to Thyroid

  1. Goitre: this means enlargement of the thyroid gland
  2. Hyperthyroidism: when there is an excess thyroid hormone
  3. Hypothyroidism: when there is a shortage of thyroid hormone
  4. Thyroid Cancer
  5. Thyroid Nodules: when lumps develop in the thyroid gland
  6. Thyroiditis: swelling of the thyroid gland

Well, various factors affect the thyroid gland. Still, to name a few, are smoking, certain chemicals and compounds like lithium, iodine, etc. Certain studies have proved psychological stress and trauma to be one of the major factors leading to thyroid-related issues.

Now the question arises does the thyroid gland or its related health problems affect the journey of a pregnant lady in any way? The answer is YES. It does. Many medical studies have proved to be very much in play to disrupt the pregnancy stage at any point in time.

Major problems faced during pregnancy with thyroid complications

Let's begin with the pre-pregnancy part, where an overactive or underactive thyroid may also affect ovulation. This ovulation process is defined as the release of an egg for fertilization. Thyroid disorders may prevent ovulation from occurring at all. Above it, the ovaries are at an increased risk for cyst development if the woman has an underactive thyroid or (hypothyroid). Severe hypothyroidism can cause milk production in the breast while preventing ovulation.

As discussed above, thyroid gland complications can affect the process of pre-pregnancy, and there is no doubt that it has adverse effects during the pregnancy and postpartum stages. Thyroid disorders during pregnancy can harm the fetus and may lead to thyroid problems in the mother after birth, such as postpartum thyroiditis. A deficiency of thyroid hormone can cause miscarriages, preterm delivery, stillbirth, and postpartum haemorrhage. Women with overactive Thyroid during pregnancy are at risk of having more severe morning sickness. Ways of treating the overactive thyroid gland during pregnancy must be individually considered.

Pregnancy for any woman is the most beautiful and emotional part of one's life. Although there are many things to take care of while suffering from thyroid complications during pregnancy, the most important one is DIET. Diet does play an essential role in preventing, controlling and eradicating thyroid complications during pregnancy. We will discuss some of the foods in this blog:-

  1. Cereals, oats, quinoa, and buckwheat.
  2. Dals and pulses for immense amounts of proteins.
  3. Fruits with some exceptions like papaya, peach, pear and strawberry.
  4. Most nuts like almonds, cashews, peanuts etc., should be completely avoided.
  5. Avoid soya in any form.
  6. If suffering from a deficiency of iodine, increase salt and egg intake.
  7. Add antioxidants to your diet like tomatoes, fenugreek leaves, brinjal, lettuce, etc.
  8. Avoid coffee and carbonated drinks as much as possible.
  9. Replace your teatime snacks with some vegetable sprouts.
